How to Prepare for Your AC Installation: A Homeowner's Checklist

Installation day goes faster when the path is clear and you know what to expect. Here's a simple checklist to get your Odessa or Midland home ready.

Installation

A new AC or HVAC system installs faster and cleaner when you do a few simple things first: clear the path to the equipment, plan for pets and parking, and know what the day looks like. None of it is hard, and a prepared home means the crew spends the day installing — not moving your furniture. Here's the homeowner checklist. (Not sure which system yet? Start with a free in-home estimate.)

Before the day

  • Confirm the plan. You should already have correct sizing and a written scope from your estimate — not "the same size as the old one."
  • Sort out financing if you're using it, so paperwork isn't a day-of scramble.
  • Know the permit picture. A full system replacement is a changeout that usually needs a permit and inspection — we pull it for you, but it's good to know it's happening.

Clear the way

  • Indoor unit: clear a path to the furnace/air handler (closet, attic access, or garage) and move stored items away from it.
  • Outdoor unit: clear a few feet around the condenser pad and the path from the driveway to it.
  • Thermostat wall: make sure it's accessible if a new thermostat is part of the job.
  • Protect floors along the work path if you like; the crew will use drop cloths too.

Plan for the day

  • Pets: secure them in a closed room or off-site — doors will be open and tools running.
  • Parking: leave driveway space for the truck and equipment.
  • Power & comfort: expect the system to be off for part of the day. In peak heat, plan a cool space or step out for a few hours.
  • Kids and walkways: keep them clear of the work areas.

What to expect during and after

  • The crew removes the old equipment, sets the new system, and tests it before they leave.
  • Ask for a quick walkthrough: new thermostat basics, your first filter size, and warranty/registration details.
  • Keep your paperwork — manufacturer parts warranty (with timely registration) is separate from the installer's labor warranty.

Where it goes wrong

  • Blocked access that turns a smooth install into a furniture-moving project.
  • Pets underfoot with doors propped open.
  • Skipping the walkthrough, then guessing at the new thermostat all summer.

What should I do next?

Frequently asked questions

How do I prepare my home for an AC installation? +

Clear a path to the indoor unit and a few feet around the outdoor condenser, secure pets in a closed room, leave driveway space for the crew, and plan for the system to be off for part of the day. Confirm sizing, financing, and the permit are sorted ahead of time so the day stays focused on the install.

How long does an AC installation take? +

A typical residential changeout is often completed in a day, though it varies with the scope — ductwork changes, electrical, or a more complex system can add time. Your installer should give you a realistic timeline up front and test the system before leaving.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Odessa or Midland? +

In most cases, yes — a full AC or furnace replacement generally requires a mechanical permit and inspection in both Odessa (Ector County) and Midland. Mega Care Solutions pulls the permit and coordinates the inspection as part of the installation, so you don't have to navigate the building department yourself.
