Cost Guide

What Affects the Cost of a Furnace Replacement?

Fuel type, efficiency, sizing, and venting all matter — and our mild winters change the math. Here's what drives the number.

Cost Guides

Honestly, it depends — on whether you heat with gas or electric, the efficiency and size you need, and what your venting and gas line require. Our winters are mild, but heat still matters, so we quote furnace replacement in person, free.

West Texas heating is smaller than our cooling load, but the February 2021 freeze (Winter Storm Uri) reminded everyone it's not optional. Here's what actually moves a furnace replacement price — and why we won't guess it online.

Gas or electric — which am I replacing?

Most Permian Basin homes heat with a gas furnace or with electric heat (including heat pumps). Fuel type shapes the equipment, the venting, and the install, so it's the first thing we confirm.

What drives a furnace replacement cost up or down?

  • Fuel type. A gas furnace and an electric system have different equipment and different install requirements.
  • Efficiency (AFUE). AFUE measures how much fuel becomes heat. Standard furnaces run around 80% AFUE; high-efficiency condensing furnaces reach the 90s but need different venting.
  • Correct size. As with cooling, sizing comes from a load calculation, not a guess — an oversized furnace short-cycles.
  • Venting and flue. Switching to a condensing furnace can mean new PVC venting; an older flue or chimney liner may need work.
  • Gas line and electrical. Line size, connections, and code can add scope.
  • Pairing with AC or a heat pump. Replacing the furnace alongside cooling as a matched system affects both efficiency and total scope.

When does replacement beat repair?

If your furnace is old, needs a heat exchanger or control board, or can't heat safely, replacement usually wins — especially if you're already replacing the AC it shares a cabinet and blower with. Our repair-or-replace framework walks through it.

What we see in the field

Because we don't heat as hard here, furnaces often outlast the AC on paper — but a neglected system can still fail on the coldest night. We also see homeowners weigh a straight furnace swap against a heat pump that heats and cools from one system. Every home is different, which is exactly why online "average" pricing can't quote yours.

What should I do next?

Frequently asked questions

Do I even need a good furnace in West Texas? +

Yes. Winters are mild, but the February 2021 freeze showed the region can turn dangerously cold. Reliable heat is part of a complete comfort plan, whether that's a gas furnace or a heat pump with backup heat.

Is a high-efficiency furnace worth it here? +

It depends. Because we heat far less than we cool, the yearly fuel savings from a condensing furnace are smaller than in a cold climate, and it may require new venting. We'll lay out the trade-offs honestly during your estimate.

Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time? +

Often, yes. They share a blower and cabinet, and installing a matched system usually protects efficiency and simplifies warranties. If only one truly needs replacing, we'll tell you.
