What Affects Mini-Split Installation Cost?
Head count, single vs. multi-zone, line-set routing, and electrical drive the number — here's how we scope a ductless install.
Cost Guides
It comes down to how many rooms you're conditioning, single zone or several, how far the line set runs, and the electrical work involved. For a casita, shop, or add-on, we'll size it right and quote it free.
Ductless mini-splits are one of the most flexible tools we install, which is exactly why cost varies so much from home to home. Here's what moves the number.
What is a mini-split, and when do people use one?
A mini-split is a heat pump with one outdoor unit connected to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor "heads" — no ductwork required. In the Permian Basin we install them constantly for casitas, garage conversions, metal shops and offices, room additions, and hot or cold rooms a central system never quite reaches.
What drives a mini-split installation cost up or down?
- Number of indoor heads (zones). One head for a garage is a very different job than four heads across an addition. More zones mean more equipment and labor.
- Single-zone vs. multi-zone. A single outdoor unit serving several heads is more involved to size and balance than a simple one-to-one system.
- Line-set length and routing. The refrigerant line set connecting indoor to outdoor units matters — a short, straight run is simple; long runs, attic routing, or a clean concealed install add work.
- Electrical. Most installs need a dedicated circuit; panel capacity and the run to the unit affect scope.
- The space itself. A finished room, an uninsulated shop, and a new addition each have different loads, which we confirm with a proper sizing calculation.
When is a mini-split the right choice?
When you're heating or cooling a space that has no ducts, or you want independent control of one area. If a central system upgrade makes more sense, we'll tell you — that honest read is what an in-home estimate is for.
What we see in the field
The single biggest cost surprise is head count: homeowners price "a mini-split" but actually need three or four zones. The second is electrical in older homes and shops. None of that is visible online, which is why AI can't quote your mini-split — it can't count your rooms or see your panel.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a mini-split cost to install? +
It depends most on how many indoor heads (zones) you need, the line-set routing, and the electrical work. A single-zone garage unit and a four-zone addition are very different jobs, so we size and quote it in person, free.
Can one mini-split cool my whole house? +
Sometimes, with a multi-zone system, but often a central system is a better fit for a whole home. Mini-splits shine for additions, casitas, shops, and rooms your main system can't reach.
Do mini-splits heat too? +
Yes. A ductless mini-split is a heat pump, so it both heats and cools — a practical option for a West Texas shop or casita that needs year-round comfort.
