What Is SEER2? HVAC Efficiency Ratings in Plain English

The higher the SEER2, the more cooling you get per unit of electricity. Here's what the number means and why it matters more here.

Daikin & Equipment

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how efficiently an air conditioner or heat pump cools over a season — the higher the number, the more cooling you get per unit of electricity. It became the U.S. standard in 2023, using more realistic test conditions than the old SEER.

In a place that cools as hard as Odessa and Midland, this number shows up on real summer bills — so it's worth understanding.

What does SEER2 measure?

SEER2 is a cooling-efficiency rating: seasonal cooling output divided by the electricity used to produce it. Two systems can both keep your house at 74° while using very different amounts of power — SEER2 is how you compare them. (For heating efficiency on a heat pump, the companion rating is HSPF2, and for a single peak-condition snapshot there's EER2.)

How is SEER2 different from SEER?

In 2023 the U.S. Department of Energy updated the test procedure to better reflect real-world ductwork and conditions. The new ratings — SEER2, EER2, HSPF2 — test at higher external static pressure, so the numbers run a little lower than the old SEER for the same equipment. It's a more honest measuring stick, not a downgrade.

What's the minimum in Texas?

Texas is in the DOE's South/Southwest region, which has higher minimums than the North. For split-system central air conditioners under 45,000 BTU, the regional minimum is 14.3 SEER2. Many homeowners choose higher-efficiency systems above that floor — especially here, where the cooling season is long and brutal.

Is higher SEER2 always worth it?

Not automatically. Efficiency has diminishing returns — the jump from a basic to a mid-efficiency system usually pays back faster than chasing the very top tier. But because we run our air conditioners so many hours a year, the payback on efficiency is stronger here than in a mild climate. We help you find the sweet spot in Daikin Lineup Compared and weigh it in what affects replacement cost.

Where it goes wrong

  • Chasing the highest number without the install to match — a poorly installed high-SEER2 system won't deliver its rating.
  • Ignoring efficiency to save up front, then paying it back on every summer bill.

What should I do next?

Frequently asked questions

What is a good SEER2 rating? +

Higher is more efficient. In Texas, split-system central ACs under 45,000 BTU must be at least 14.3 SEER2, and many homeowners choose higher. The right level depends on your home, budget, and how long you'll stay — efficiency has diminishing returns past a point.

What's the difference between SEER and SEER2? +

SEER2 replaced SEER in 2023 with an updated DOE test that better reflects real ductwork conditions. Because it tests at higher external static pressure, SEER2 numbers run slightly lower than old SEER numbers for the same equipment — it's a more realistic measuring stick.

Does SEER2 matter more in West Texas? +

Yes. Because Odessa and Midland cool for so many hours each year, the efficiency of your system shows up on real summer bills more than it would in a mild climate, so the payback on a higher-efficiency system is stronger here.
